Remembering The Importance Of Service

We recently had the opportunity to help a needy family get one step closer to moving back into their home in New Orleans. While we can’t do every job for free, when there’s a need that comes up that’s real genuine, I like to know about it.

We’re helping Mr. and Mrs. Smith get back into their home by upgrading their old out-dated aluminum wiring installation complete with new receptacles and a new service panel as well as working with the city of New Orleans to get their home inspected and their meter back in place.

The Smith family is really doing their best to get back into their home. They’ve been displaced since Hurricane Katrina and relocated to Albany, Georgia. For the last year or so, they’ve been living with their daughter in the city.

Before the storm Mr. Ronell and Mrs. Sylvia Smith worked as long distance freight carriers. Wanting to be home on a regular basis, they decided to find local jobs before the storm hit.

By the time the storm hit, Mrs. Sylvia had become ill. In fact, she went from an evacuation shelter to the hospital where she was diagnosed with Echalsia. It’s a rare swallowing disorder that affects ones ability to swallow their food. It affects about 1 in 100,000 people. Over time it becomes progressively more difficult to swallow and get food to the stomach.

True fighters, Mrs Sylvia and Mr. Ronell never gave up no matter what the doctors said. Even after getting laid off last year, Mr. Ronell and Mrs. Smith kept fighting and they are never short of a kind word or smile for others.

Mrs. Sylvia found out about Trinity Electric via our phone book advertisement a couple of months ago. She was attracted to our company logo – a cross. We take our faith and walk with God seriously as well as the charge to give back.

Because of this, I truly believe we are a blessed company. We talked and prayed together and I could discerned that the Smith family was a family in need that I could help.

There’s a lot of talk about community, but I think small businesses have the resources to really help out more in our local community. Small businesses do have the resources to help people a lot more than most larger corporations.

It’s easier sometimes to just cut a check rather than give of your time and resources. That’s what we’re doing – giving our time and resources to be a blessing to someone in our community.

There are several things that I admire about Mr. and Mrs. Smith. They are such an inspiration. Their tenderness to each other and the strength of their marriage really impressed me.

We’re so happy to be helping the Smith family get back into their house. Finishing their electrical inspection last week, we hope they will be able to get back to the things they enjoy in their own home real soon. They both enjoy reading the Bible together and Mrs. Sylvia is looking forward to getting back to gardening in her backyard, sewing more, and cooking more wholesome meals in her own kitchen.

We’re pleased to share this story with our Trinity Electric family. We are not sharing this to brag or to boast but to challenge you to find ways to give back to your community even if it’s a small thing.

As we remember the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on this day, his commitment to service and community and his convictions led by his religious and spiritual beliefs, we carry our charge to do more in our community and remember that charity starts at home as Jesus taught.

At Trinity Electric we value safety and community. The Safety Foundation International recommends a full blown safety inspection for any home that’s 40 years old, that’s had a major renovation, that’s changing hands from one owner to the next, or has had a major appliance added.

When summing up the number of houses that fall into at least one of the above mentioned categories, almost every home can benefit from a routine safety inspection.

At Trinity Electric, we’ve done our best to make these inspections affordable and hassle free for all our customers new and old. Keep your home and family safe and remember, we can all do more in our community. If we can ever be of assistance to your family or business don’t hesitate to call us at (504) 305-1222 for 24/7 service or use our contact form.

Attics can be brutally hot on a summers day. When heat is absorbed by your walls and ceilings, attic temperatures can climb to over 150 degrees. Even if your ceilings are well insulated and your home is air conditioned, this heat can seep down into your home.

 Whole House Ventilator

Push the heat out, pull a breeze through.
A whole house fan draws cooler outside air through your open windows and forces it through the attic and out through the roof vents. Your house and your attic are all cooled. Whole house fans are designed to operate in the early morning and after sundown, when the outside temperature drops.

The idea is to turn off the air conditioning and to turn on the whole house fan. With your windows open, fresh, cool air is drawn into your home, forcing out the hot air. Because whole house fans use far less energy than air conditioners, they cut cooling costs. In fact, whole house fans typically use about one-tenth of the electricity of comparably sized air conditioners.

Attic Ventilators remove superheated attic air, making any home more comfortable, whether it’s air conditioned or not. In homes that are, the air conditioners run less and don’t have to work nearly as hard. These units have a 14” diameter steel blade specially designed for maximum air movement. Each unit operates automatically by using an adjustable built-in thermostat.

According to lighting and design experts, there are several types of lighting techniques and lighting plans that can be used to illuminate spaces within your home. The first, general or ambient lighting, provides even, overall illumination.

This type of light is attractively provided with recessed down-lights and doesn’t clash with any particular type of décor. Down-lights are spaced in a regular pattern, and should be positioned according to furniture placement, windows and door openings.

• Bedrooms can make excellent use of ambient lighting and help eliminate the need lamp-lighting; Have a switch installed for recessed overhead lighting close to where the bed will be located for ease of use.

Baffle Trim Used for general lighting

Eyeball Trim Used for directing light to specific areas such as fireplace mantles

Shower Trim Used for lighting wet locations

General lighting in dining rooms can provide accent lighting to table settings, on either side of a chandelier, and can highlight artwork, buffet displays, or curio objects.

GDown lights mounted 18″ off the edge of the cabinets and spaced 3′ to 4′ on centers is an excellent way to create additional general lighting.

One fixture mounted over the mirror is a good way of lighting the bathroom, but can cause shadows on the face. Addition of recessed down lights mounted 24″ to 36″ on centers between the face and the mirror is a better method for lighting the face and the head.

In bathrooms, down-lights can be used to chase shadows and provide light in spaces that are sometimes overlooked, such as over bathtubs and showers

In living rooms, ambient lights should be placed about 8 feet apart, providing for functional lighting needs as well as for mood setting scenarios using dimmers

 Surge Protection

The popularity of home offices, the internet and home theaters means that there are more home electronics that are vulnerable to voltage surges than before. A whole house rotection plan must protect against voltage surges on both the power line and the telephone or communication lines.

You may be unaware that surges can enter your expensive electronic equipment (modems, FAX machines, answering machines, TV’s, VCR’s) through telephone lines and cable TV or satellite dish connections. Some home entertainment systems, as well as computers, use more than one of these systems simultaneously.

Power surges in the home can be caused by a number of events. The most obvious is lightning. In some areas, you can expect to have a lightning strike within a square mile of your home at least once a year or more. That strike, should it hit a power line, can send a damaging surge into your home that may spread housewide.

Another type of surge can be caused by power switching at your utility. Either from generator to generator or from utility feeds. These smaller surges occur regularly. In the past, most home appliances could handle the smaller surges, but over time they can damage computer chip based devices.

 Whole House Surge Protector

Connects directly to the circuit breaker box. Provides power line protection, 2-pair telephone/fax/ modem protection and dual CATV/ satellite feed surge protection. Protected Equipment Warranty covers $10,000 for “White Appliances”/$25,000 for Communication Electronics.

To protect microwave ovens, small appliances, computers, televisions, stereos, etc. from the damaging effects of power surges, use a Surge Protective Device Receptacle.

 Four-In-One Surge Protective Receptacle

If you’ve just bought a new PC and printer, added a two-line phone and fancy new voice/data communications equipment to your home office, a compact Four-In-One Receptacle with LED light is perfect to shield delicate circuitry.

 Ceiling Fans Pay For Themselves

Did you know you save energy in the summer (by as much as 40%) when you turn up the thermostat and turn on a ceiling fan. That’s because in the summer, every single degree below 75 that you set your thermostat you increase your cooling costs by about 9%.

Ceiling fans create a wind chill effect that makes rooms feel cooler than they actually are and cost considerabley less to run than your air conditioning system.

In the winter, ceiling fans can move heat trapped near the ceiling back into the living area, reducing heating costs by up to 10%. This is especially valuable in rooms with high or vaulted cailings.

Fan Speed / Fan Light Control

The Out-of-Sight PowerJack is a unique 4-wire telephone jack providing a low-voltage power supply that installs behind cordless wall phones, answering machines and combination units. No more unsightly dangling cords and bulky transformers to interfere with décor. All unsightly wires tuck neatly behind the phone for a streamlined look.

An integrated network is where the present meets the future in residential wiring. It integrates home office, home networking, home theater, whole-house video, Internet and phone service. Turning the house of today into the home of tomorrow.

The integrated network home system is built around a central structured wiring system and application modules for Whole-House Internet, Home Office and Home-Wide Video, This gives you greater control and flexibility of familiar services, such as telephone and cable TV service, and brings you exciting new features, such as in-home computer networking.

Integrated networks will make your new home the easiest to use and help to make it the most enjoyable place you have ever lived. And add resale value to your home should you ever decide to sell.

Your new home will be more than a collection of rooms. It will be a collection of technologies. Integrated network are designed to organize and distribute these technologies throughout your new home more simply and more effectively than ever before.

Integrated networks connect you to the world of the Internet. From the world of your new home.

The popularity of the Internet has brought almost as many computers to today’s homes as telephones. Integrated networks make it easy to link them more efficiently and use them more effectively than you ever have before.

You’ll be able to enjoy high-speed Internet access from the family room, the bedrooms, or the kitchen. Imagine watching a streaming video of a master chef via Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or cable modem, and downloading the recipe at the same time.

And to help protect those new computers, and all your expensive home electronics, integrated networks also offer whole-house surge suppression to guard against damaging overvoltage’s caused by voltage spikes.Your new home will be more than a collection of rooms. It will be a collection of technologies.

Metairie Lighting convenience made easy: Wouldn’t it be nice to never have to get up to turn a light on and off? Would you enjoy the convenience of being able to dim the lights from your couch or bed when you want to set a different mood?

Do you have lamps and ceiling fixtures that you’d love to be able to dim but the closest you get is a 3-way bulb? Are you anything like me in that you love having remote controls for so many other devices in your home? A Metairie professional electrician can assist you with installing a remotely operated light system.

Well if you answered yes to any of the above questions, there are solutions that don’t require an electrician or even for you to be the slightest bit handy. I’ve been using a technology for over 25 years and have turned many friends and relatives on to it because it’s so simple and inexpensive. It surprises me though that most people still haven’t even heard of it.

While there are many companies that participate in the remote power control and remote lighting arena, X10 has been the market leader for many years. That’s probably because they build reliable, easy to install and use, and very affordable products.

Being a gadget nut, I was naturally attracted to these products over 25 years ago while representing them as a manufacturer’s rep. As the years have gone by, the breadth of products available and the various companies getting involved with home automation have expanded greatly but the technology itself is still the same.

X10 uses the existing wiring in a home or business to carry a control signal to communicate with “modules” that are either plugged-in or wired in to the building. The most basic is a small box or module that would get plugged into an outlet and then you plug a lamp into the module.

Now to tell that module to turn the lamp on, off, dim or brighten, you need to send it a control signal.

This can actually be done in a variety of ways including a handheld remote that wirelessly sends a signal directly to the receiver in the module. This module can also receive signals from the remote and send them to other modules throughout the home.

By using a combination of the building wiring to carry the control signals to other modules, a single receiver for the remote control is all that’s necessary to control up to 16 devices.

A signal can also be sent from a programmable timer, a motion detector, a wall switch that operates on a battery that you can place anywhere, a computer interface and other methods.

There are also modules that handle appliances, wire into the wall to replace a basic light switch (installing this is no different than changing a switch or installing an old fashioned dimmer), and a variety of accessories that can completely automate your home.

Most people will start out with a basic hand-held remote control with a receiver/module that plugs into the wall and will control a single lamp. You wouldn’t believe how inexpensive this is as X10 has specials and current sale prices put it under $20.

From this point it’s very easy (and addicting) to expand to control more electrical devices. The actual limit on the technology is 256 devices at a single location. I’ve not even come close to that and practically everything electrical in my home is using this stuff.

In future articles I’ll share some of the great things that this technology has done for my family and me.

Just think what your family will think when you show them the new convenience that you’ve added to their lives. Even if you can’t put a nail in the wall or are afraid of electricity, you are sure to amaze people with your new-found electrical sophistication.

You’ll also become the envy of your friends and will wind up becoming the authority on Metairie home automation in your circle.
